Clide vs Windows Terminal: Why Managing AI Agents Needs More
Windows Terminal is an excellent terminal emulator. It supports multiple profiles, tabs, split panes, GPU-accelerated text rendering, and a clean settings UI. For running a few shells and SSH sessions, it’s hard to beat. But the moment you start running five or more AI CLI agents across different repositories, its limitations become architectural rather than cosmetic.
The core problem is session awareness. Windows Terminal sees each tab as an opaque process emitting text. It has no concept of what’s happening inside that process. It cannot tell you that the Claude Code session in tab 7 is waiting for your approval, that the agent in tab 3 hit an error five minutes ago, or that tab 12 has been idle since you forgot about it after lunch. You discover these states by manually clicking through every tab, reading the last few lines of output, and making a mental note. With three tabs this is manageable. With ten or fifteen, it’s a workflow tax that compounds throughout the day.
Clide solves this at the architecture level. Every session has a tracked status — active, idle, blocked, done — that’s visible in the Fleet panel without switching tabs. The Concierge system monitors terminal output in real time using pattern matching, detecting prompts, errors, completions, and context limit warnings. In watch mode, it sends you a toast notification when a session needs attention. In autopilot mode, it can respond to routine prompts automatically, with a configurable grace period so you can cancel if needed. This means your eight Claude Code sessions can run simultaneously, and you only context-switch when there’s actually something that requires your judgment.
The second gap is orchestration. Windows Terminal can open tabs, but it cannot coordinate work across them.
